The Ice Cave Under The Volcano РKatla Icecave Tour From Vík

Magnificent Glacier and Volcano Tour

Join us on this great tour

The volacon Katla

The volcano Katla in M√Ĺrdalsj√∂kull glacier is a large volcano in southern Iceland. It is very active; twenty eruptions have been documented between 930 and 1918, at intervals of 20‚Äď90 years. It has not erupted violently for 103 years, although there may have been small eruptions that did not break the ice cover, including ones in 1955, 1999, and 2011.

Katla and Eyjafjallajökull

Katla has been showing signs of unrest since 1999, and geologists have concerns that it might erupt in the near future.Particularly, monitoring has been intensified following the March 2010 eruptions of a smaller neighbouring volcano, the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. The eruption of this nearby long-dormant volcano in March and April 2010 prompted fears among some geophysicists that it might trigger an eruption at the larger and more dangerous Katla. In the past 1,000 years, all three known eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull have triggered subsequent Katla eruptions. You should not worry about joining the tour because we will know in good time if an eruption will take place.

Into The Glacier – From Klaki Base Camp

Into the Glacier

The world’s largest man-made ice tunnel

Into the Glacier classic tour from Klaki base camp invites you to explore the untouched beauty of Langjokull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier. Walk inside the man-made ice tunnel that leads right to the heart of the glacier and learn exciting facts about Icelandic glaciers along the way.

Langjökull Glacier

Langjökull (the Long Glacier) is the second largest in Iceland. It covers an area of about 950 km² and most of it rises between 1200 and 1300 m above sea level. It rests on a massif of hyaloclastite mountains.

The Glaciers

The southwestern part of the ice cap is called Geitlandsj√∂kull, which rises to an elevation of 1400 meters. To the south of Geitlandsj√∂kull and separated from the main ice cap, is the smaller (1350 m) √ě√≥risj√∂kull, which sits atop an irregular table mountain.

The man-made cave

Until now, what lay beneath the surface of the Langj√∂kull glacier, had been a mystery, known only by a small group of scientists and glaciologists. In 2010 however, Baldvin Einarsson and Hallgrimur √Ėrn Arngr√≠msson had a bold and daring vision, to take people not just around and onto the glacier, but also inside the heart of the remote and extraordinary ice cap, to see the magnificent ‚Äúblue ice‚ÄĚ which is buried deep beneath the surface.

Who we are

We are the people who got the crazy idea of drilling a tunnel into a glacier and actually made it happen! We want to give people the chance to experience this amazing natural wonder and see the Langjökull glacier from the inside. Learn, feel and absorb the ice, taking home memories that are truly out of this world!

The Into the Glacier Tour

From the Klaki base camp, specially modified monster trucks will take you to the glacier. These powerful vehicles turn the trip to the glacier into an adventure itself!
Join the Into the Glacier classic tour from Klaki base camp for a unique chance to explore the inside of a massive glacier and appreciate the power of Icelandic nature. Book your adventure today!
