Geldingadalur eruption tour

Geldingadalur Active Volcano Tour

Fagradalsfjall Eruption

Have you ever seen an actual active volcano?

On March 19th, 2021 an eruption in the valley of Geldingadalur in the Reykjanes Peninsula began. It started as a 700m long fissure but soon formed into a tall crater. The eruption did not come as a surprise since the earth in Reykjavik and the Reykjanes Peninsula had been shaken by earthquakes for some time before.

The volcano

The eruption is not thought to pose any or little threat to life, infrastructure, or air travel. The activity in this new volcano is more effusive rather than explosive. The lava flow is gentle forming molten rivers surrounding the crater.

Visiting the eruption

We start the tour in Reykjavik and along the way to the volcano, there will be Reykjanes sightseeing with an expert guide. We will hike to the eruption site and stay there for some time, enjoying the scenery. Hot chocolate and kleinur (twisted doughnuts) will be offered before we head back to Reykjavik

The Ice Cave Under The Volcano – Katla Icecave Tour From Vík

Magnificent Glacier and Volcano Tour

Join us on this great tour

The volacon Katla

The volcano Katla in Mýrdalsjökull glacier is a large volcano in southern Iceland. It is very active; twenty eruptions have been documented between 930 and 1918, at intervals of 20–90 years. It has not erupted violently for 103 years, although there may have been small eruptions that did not break the ice cover, including ones in 1955, 1999, and 2011.

Katla and Eyjafjallajökull

Katla has been showing signs of unrest since 1999, and geologists have concerns that it might erupt in the near future.Particularly, monitoring has been intensified following the March 2010 eruptions of a smaller neighbouring volcano, the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. The eruption of this nearby long-dormant volcano in March and April 2010 prompted fears among some geophysicists that it might trigger an eruption at the larger and more dangerous Katla. In the past 1,000 years, all three known eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull have triggered subsequent Katla eruptions. You should not worry about joining the tour because we will know in good time if an eruption will take place.

The Ice Cave Under The Volcano

We will be driving on road number 1, but will soon turn to no-man´s-land! You will be amazed as we drive by the mountains and glaciers all around us.

You will be taken up to the base of Kötlujökull glacier, where the view in front of you will be simply breathtaking: layers of different colored ice creating a striped pattern on the glacier will reveal thousands of years of history right before your eyes!

Your knowledgeable guide will tell you all about it and about the Ice Cave itself that you will visit shortly afterward for a small hike. This will be both an educational and exciting experience all at once!

Hot Spring Tour

Golden Circle and Secret Lagoon

Do you want to visit a secret natural bathing spot?

You are bound to love this tour with all it’s History and nature.

The day starts with your pick-up in Reykjavik. We then head out of the capital area to the Golden Circle. The Golden Circle has many beautiful sights to offer, but at the same time, most of the places are historically important as well. We have this tour planned to make the best out of your day.

Þingvellir

Our first stop is at Þingvellir, the place of the first Icelandic parliament. The first parliament was established there in 930 AD and it is, therefore, the oldest one in Europe. Besides all the history you can also see the Mid-Atlantic ridge. This is the split of the tectonic plates that divides Europe from North America.

Geysir

After that, we stop at Geysir. This “water puddle” gives its name to all the other Geysers in the world. “Strokkur”, the little brother of Geysir, is still active today and he erupts every 5-8min and it is truly a big spectacle.

Gullfoss

Last but not least is Gullfoss, the golden waterfall. In the summertime, up to 130.000 l/s are running down this powerful waterfall. In good weather conditions, we are also able to see Langjökull glacier as well.

Friðheimar Tomato Farm

Iceland is well known for its geothermal energy. We don’t only use it to heat our houses, we also use it to grow vegetables in greenhouses. Friðheimar Tomato Farm is probably the best place to experience it and that’s why we decided to have our Lunch stop here (please note: Lunch is not included in the tour price). We will take a short tour through the greenhouse before we are able to enjoy the food.

Secret Lagoon

The day isn’t over yet. There is no better way to end a great day with a relaxing swim in geothermal water. Your guide will drive you to a thermal pool called “Gamla Laugin” (The Secret Lagoon). It was formed in 1891 and is still a popular place for all the locals in the area. It is therefore the oldest swimming pool in the country with a constant temperature of 38/40 °C, thanks to the hot waters from surrounding geothermal activity.
